Another Greek Island - Halki

Chalki or Halki is probably one of the least heard Greek Islands. Mykonos and Santorini are the crowd favourites with the “typical” white washed blue dommed buildings and there are emerging alternatives such us Paros, Milos or Ios all of which are part of the cyclades which share the same architectural inheritance.

I personally have no objections to any them as I love Greek Islands; the people, food, the culture complimented with nice weather and blue waters. However, I like having calm holidays with less crowds and if that’s backed up with a friendly budget I end up with my own favourites.

Having said all of the above, Halki would not be my first choice even for an alternative but I really liked it and I think it deserves some attention.

Where is Halki?

It’s very close to Rhodes and Symi. Halki is one of the Dodecanese Islands so the artitectural influence is more of an italian look with colorful buildings, the rest is all Greek :)

There are boats from Rhodes to Halki the frequency of which depends on harbour of your choice. There are boats on certain days from the main harbour and there are boats everyday even two times a day during high season from Skala Kamirou. The down point of Skala Kamirou is that there isn’t a convenient public transportation from the main port area. We used taxis from the airport to Skala Kamirou and from there to the old city. The price wasn’t cheap because Rhodes is a big island but the lucky side is we had other people who wanted to share our taxi so that was nice :)

Where to stay in Halki?

Halki is one of the smaller islands so the port is the most convenient place to stay. There are plenty of hotels, airbnbs, restaurants, cafes, markets to accomodate and feed you :) however, it’s good to keep in mind that Halki is not a main tourist destination, that means the options are not as many as the other islands. Planning early will be helpful to have options.

What to do in Halki?

Relax and go with the flow :) There are nice beaches far from the madding crowds. That’s also my favourite summer / Greek Island activity. Trekking to some of those beaches is another activity. Don’t forget your confortable summer shoes, sunblock and your hat!

If you don’t want to walk there is a taxi in the island, yes only one :)

There are also boat excursions which I enjoy but we haven’t tried in this island because we were quiet content with the beaches closeby.

We stayed in Halki for 5 days and enjoyed it very much. We liked the simplicity and serenity this charming little island offered.
